CHAPTER 1 - Tiamat, The Weakest Dragon in YGGDRASIL
'Fuuckkkkk, I'm gonna be late!' I scamper hurriedly towards the VR chair and immediately opened the game YGGDRASIL without changing from my work outfit.
The game is only sixty minutes away before closing. If only the dust-storm was a little bit nicer, she could've made it back home three hours ago.
It took some time until I am finally in the game, and after logging in a sense of nostalgia washed over me. After all, it's been more than a month ever since I've played this game. The amount of money, effort, and time I have fun on YGGDRASIL is not something to scoff at.
Then the loading screen takes place and I finally saw it. My masterpiece, Tiamat, the Goddess of Dragons.
Tiamat is a red haired woman with amethyst colored eyes. Donning her head are two horns and a delicate golden head piece like crown, with a jade colored dress from the Period of Tang Dynasty in China. The dress flared outwards with long-large sleeves that looked delicate to the touch, and a long red scarf circling her hips where the ends ended up at her arms.
I'm a sucker for ancient asian dresses. Sue me.
My avatar is a little bit mainstream, especially for people who are really into fantasy genre. But who cares, I've always liked Dragons when I hear my Grandfather played Dungeons and Dragons, a fantasy game where the technology is not as high tech as today, and I was absolutely smitten. Of course the game itself is ancient, but I love it regardless. Especially how my Grandfather eyes would definitely sparkle every time I asked him about his favorite games back in the old days.
As I got older, I kept on reminiscing about what my Grandfather told me, and that is how I stumble upon YGGDRASIL. A game large enough that anyone can mix and match their own character. Kinda similar to Dungeons and Dragons, just more advanced.
There really are a lot of Dragons in the game. Ranging from Sword Masters to Mages. But those are not what my Tiamat is.
Dragons with their hard scales and high stats at the beginning of the game is pretty easy to play, and you can actually choose the stages in which you want your Dragon to be; Dragonling, Young Dragon, or Adult Dragon. The stats are higher if you choose a more evolved Dragon, but there's no room for min-maxing the character if you do so.
But no one in the game has actually bothered to have a full tank mode. And I could understand why they choose not to. It is very disadvantageous since you don't have any physical or magic attack, which made things a lot harder. The defense mechanic in the game only allowed you to withstand attacks longer, and resist mechanic allowed you to not get debuffs from other players.
That is why my Tiamat is special.
When I first played the game, I maxed out all the physical and magic defense, then the resist. Small monsters and low level Players can't touch me. I don't need high agility either because it only affects speed and dodge rate.
It took a while to be able to damage other players, and it can get really frustrating sometimes because of my abysmal attack outputs. That is until I evolved Tiamat from Old Dragon (which can be evolved after you reached max on Adult Dragon) then to Ancient Dragon.
It turns out once you go max on Ancient Dragon, you can open a God Beast racial class, which is only available when you evolve your character from when they were still babies (or Youngling in my case).
God Beast is apparently the level cap for Dragons and I'm the first one to reach that racial class. I still remember how ecstatic I am when I found out, and how I screamed with joy when I unlocked its tenth tier skill.
World Eater, after the name of the last powerful boss in the Campaign.
I get to absorb attacks, and all the attack I absorbed will be returned times the amount of my attack power (both physical attacks and magic attacks). The only drawback is that you have to withstand the attack long enough, without dying, then you finally get to use the skill. Basically only those who maxed out on physical defense and magic defense can use this particular skill.
So fucking meta.
This is the skill that I continually abuse even in PvPs. And this is the skill that catches the eye of the guild Ainz Ooal Gown.
Because I managed to defeat their Paladin of Pure Silver, The World Champion; A title which can only be gained by the number one winner in PvP, Touch Me.
It was a painstakingly long process, and I will never be able to forget that moment, that combination of luck, disbelief, and awe.
Touch Me was ruthless. His build is basically a cross between a warrior and a tank. Even if I use World Eater, the damage was not critical because of his armor and the timer had run out before he is able to use World Break. Because PvP rule in YGGDRASIL states that if the timer runs out, the Player with the highest HP would win the round.
It was amazing, to finally see someone who is kinda a tank, but can dish out large damage. Of course I added him as on my friend list soon after that and was really ecstatic to see that he accepts.
Soon after, YGGDRASIL forum blows up, with recordings of my PvP battle against Touch me and I was given a title The Weakest Dragon in YGGDRASIL.
I still remember how epic it was, and I bask in the attention the Players have given me. Moreover, I'm not mad about the title I was given because it was true. I have almost no points on my physical and magic attack.
That was the first and the last time I received the title 'World Champion' at level 77.
After this, I was constantly targeted.
It's not just one player who PKed me. It would be impossible for them to do so because of my build. Even Touch Me, one of the strongest three players in YGGDRASIL could only take away about sixty percent of my HP in the PvP battle.
Three guild; two human, and one elven guild created a coalition to PK me for fun. One guild has a maximum capacity of 50 players and these guilds are high ranking guild. About 150 players managed to took me down, and a video of my downfall was posted. There's even a separate forum about me getting PKed.
The community is so toxic and I remembered how awful it was at the time because I was a solo player, and my level dropped to 70. Even a one level drop is massive. Every time I raised my level and skills I would only get PKed which caused me to stop playing YGGDRASIL for a few months.
Until I get an email from Touch Me, asking me why was I not enlisted in the next PvP event. I explained everything to him, about the forum, the community, and how I just stopped playing altogether.
The next reply I got from him was really unexpected. He said he wanted to help me and he had only one question that I should answered truthfully. I don't see how he could help me with this question since he asked me what I do for a living, but I answered anyways.
'I'm an owner of the bakery and café Pâtisserie La œillet.' I typed in. He only reply with 'Noted.' and 'Please look forward to my next message in the next three days.'
Pâtisserie La œillet is a bakery and cafe for the elite because the world is becoming more polluted and toxic, stuff like organic bread or coffee is in high commodity. Rich people with absurd amount of money would want to get a sense of normalcy, and that's where I raked in all the money. I'll provide, as long as they can pay for it.
As promised in three days I suddenly received an invitation to join the guild Ainz Ooal Gown, and my first response was 'What the actual Fuck?'
Ainz Ooal Gown is one of the five strongest guild in YGGDRASIL at the time, and the hardest guild to join. Basically a guild for the elite, all the players in the guild are hardcore players who are masters of their own character, moreover, Ainz Ooal Gown has the most number of World Items in YGGDRASIL and has never been defeated by anyone.
So why the hell does this prestigious guild wanted me to join?
I thought at first that it was a prank, or the Guild Leader may have misclicked my name to join, but there is no one on my friend's list who is a member of Ainz Ooal Gown.
Except for one.
Soon after, I received a message from Touch Me, saying that I have been accepted to join the guild Ainz Ooal Gown. Of course not wanting to waste this massive opportunity, I pressed YES, and was immediately transported to a huge long table with about other 40 players of the game. Players that I assume are members of Ainz Ooal Gown.
Immediately after, I was bombarded with messages like 'Congratulations!' or Friend Requests from members of Ainz Ooal Gown.
A voice from my right pops up in my ears, which kinda shocked me for a bit because I never have to use those features before.
It was the voice of a teenager, 'Hello and welcome Tiamat-san, I am Momonga, and I'm the guild leader of Ainz Ooal Gown.'
'Hello.' I answered timidly. 'If I may ask, what the hell?' I breathed at him which earn a few snickers and giggles from other guild members.
Then they explained that Ainz Ooal Gown is created to help the heteromorphic race, to PK all the human or demi human race who discriminate against the heteromorphic race, but soon after the Guild grows. Apparently it's hard to enter the guild because the players are more focused on min-maxing character and apparently each player have their own lore.
They've had their eyes on me ever since I defeated Touch Me, even though I claimed it was all luck because Touch me hasn't activated his World Break skills. The others said that the fact that I clipped away more than seventy percent of his HP proves that the min-maxing of my character works in my favor.
Then I was bombarded with questions from the pink slime tank, Bukubukuchagama, about my build. Ulbert asked how on earth was it like to be defeated by three guilds. While Peroroncino asked about my cup size.
That is how I joined the guild.
After that the YGGDRASIL becomes my only source of entertainment with the guild and the game become more fun. They helped me raise my level to 100 and to maximize my character. Soon after I realize it has become a home and that the members had become my friends.
But reality is different.
A few years after that the guild members dwindled down, because they have more important things to do IRL. I can understand that, and I'm not angry about it. Because in the end YGGDRASIL is just a game, it's impossible for us to be stuck in something that doesn't even exist.
Despite all that, Momonga stayed. I played with him more, and get to know him better. I even created an IRL event in my bakery since they wanted to know what bread and coffee tastes like, and it works in my favor because I wanted to check up on them.
Only the nine original member showed up. The rest apparently had move on with YGGDRASIL, or reality caught up to them. Some doesn't even reply to my e-mails to meet up.
The IRL Bakery event becomes a yearly event for Ainz Ooal Gown members, those who wanted to show up anyways, or those who wanted free bread and coffee.
Slowly but surely, the game is dying, people has lost interest to the game, there's no more updates or even patch updates.
Then there are only two active members in Ainz Ooal Gown. Me and Momonga.
Momonga often told me how sad and angry he was that our friend abandoned us, but I always told him the opposite and that he needed to be more understanding. To me, Ainz Ooal Gown is home, they are just away for now, but they will always have a home to return to.
Until there's an update in YGGDRASIL forum in 1 December, 2138.
'FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Today, the Developer made a difficult decision to shutdown YGGDRASIL DMMO-RPG as the game is no longer in line with the newest technology, and it's getting more difficult to update the game. The game will shut down on 1 January 2139.
Thank you for playing with YGGDRASIL.'
Then soon after they make another forum on the opening of YGGDRASIL II, with newer technology and features. But you have to start from scratch, which means all your hard work and effort will not live to see another day.
Not long after that, Momonga send an e-mail to every member of Ainz Ooal Gown to stay until the shut down of the game.
And here I am, scrambling over my unmovable loading screen, and it's only 55 minutes away from when the game will be shutting down.
After a few minutes, I have finally entered into the game, and teleported directly to the meeting table. Only Momonga was sitting there at the large table, an elder lich, all by himself.
I wanted to cry for Momonga. After knowing him for a few years now, YGGDRASIL is everything for him. He poured his heart and soul into this game. Even though he never told anyone, I know he spend a lot of money to YGGDRASIL instead of taking care of his basic nevessities and this worries me a lot. Almost a third of his life is dedicated to YGGDRASIL. Imagine how he would felt, seeing the forum from the developers about the game shutting down.
No. I shake my head IRL, this isn't the time for pity party. Tonight I'm here to celebrate our effort and our bond, to celebrate the guild and its achievements.
Crying can be done later.
'Momo-chan!' I cheerfully said towards the microphone. Using voice actor tricks from Bukubuku Chagama to make myself as happy as possible, 'I'm sorry I'm late, I got held up because of the weather.'
'Tiamat-san! I'm so glad I can see you before the game is shutting down, and it's fine! I'm really happy you could come.'
That's good, from the tone of his voice, he's really happy to see you.
'Am I the only one here?' I asked slowly, afraid it would destroy his mood.
'Herohero-san was just here Tiamat-san, but he can't stay until the game shuts down.' His tone dropped a bit, showing how disappointed he was. But there's nothing he can do. The fact that some of them visited for the last time showed that they care. Even though I know, they won't care as much as Momonga...
'Well, I finished all my work for today. So I can stay with you until the game shuts down, Momo-chan! Rejoice, for I am here.' I joke with him.
He send me a laughing emoji, 'That is true.' It was quiet for a moment before he softly said, 'I'm really happy you're here.'
'Me too Momo-chan. You know, it must have been hard being the Guild Master of Ainz Ooal Gown. Since I am here all by myself, and as the last member of Ainz Ooal Gown, I will represent every member of this guild to say this.'
'W-wha? What is it Tiamat-san?'
I raised my avatar, go straight towards him and launch myself with a huge hug towards the elder lich. Hugging is not a 17 act, so its permitted within the game. 'Me and all the other members would like to say to you, Momonga, the forever leader of Ainz Ooal Gown, thank you for everything. Thank you for being there where nobody would. Thank you for being strong. Thank you for the wonderful memories we all have in the game. But most importantly, thank you for making Ainz Ooal Gown another home for us.'
Through my speaker, I could hear him sniffling, Which made me relieved. I'm kinda happy that I'm not the only one who's on the verge of crying tonight.
He returned the hug 'Thank you very much, Tiamat-san.'
I cleared my throat, 'Now that it's all been said and done, what about a last tour through all the floors starting from the first floor?'
'Of course! It would be my honor to gave you one last tour.'
I beamed and send him a let's go emoji.
And so, we toured the place, from the first floor to the tenth floor, looking at all the designs of the guild for the last time, and collecting all of the Floor Guardians, until we returned to the Throne Room on the ninth floor.
'This place is as majestic as ever.' I mentioned out loud unknowingly. It's true, the members spend so much time and effort into every single piece. It's divine.
Momonga then proceed to sit on the lone throne in the room, and I stood on his left, he commands the Floor Guardians to wait in front of the throne and the Pleiades lead by Sebas in a line on his right side.
'Have you read Albedo's lore, Tiamat-san?' Momonga asked.
'Well, not really. It can only be accessed by the Guild Staff which only you could hold, so I only read some of them in the library.'
Momonga opened Albedo's lore for me to read:
'She is a demoness who holds the title of Guardian Overseer, which is the highest-ranking position in the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick. With flowing raven hair and golden pupils, her beauty could bewitch a nation.
She is proud of her position and confronts intruders as a confident, dignified superior being.
Regardless of how brilliant or brave her foes are, or whether she considers them strong, she will never acknowledge them as being equal to herself.
This is because she understands the meaning of the position bestowed upon her.
Her abilities befit the title of Guardian Overseer, with outstanding intelligence and combat ability.
That said, she is not omnicompetent. For instance, in pure wits, Demiurge is her superior, while Shalltear is superior in fighting ability. Yet, nobody in Nazarick can rival her administrative ability.
In addition, her feminine skills -- particularly those pertaining to being a housewife -- are excellent, and during her free time, she can be seen sweeping, sewing, and so on.
Though the reason is unknown, she enjoys cleanliness and her desire for such frequently drives her to clean things up.
In particular, her ability to sort out bookshelves knows no peer.
However, she recognizes the possessions of others as belonging to them, so she rarely insists on cleaning up.
That said, the items accumulated through her collector's habit are typically very messy.
Therefore, it remains to be seen whether she actually likes being tidy.
This might well be an act -- in order to appear as the perfect woman -- though the truth of that is unknown. It is too scary to confirm.
She always has a gentle smile on her, and her elegant way of speech has made many people think she is a goddess or an angel.
That mistake is not particularly laughable, given that she is surrounded by that sort of atmosphere and acts in an appropriate way.
The fact is, it would not be wrong to view her in that way.
She was originally planned to be an angel of the highest order, but she ended up with a greatly distorted appearance after being fused with a monster from the land of dreams.
Because of that, her personality is similarly twisted, being merciless and cruel, cunning and savage. She gives her enemies despair and revels in their agonizing deaths.
Her usual expression seems to be there to suppress the urges which flow from her heart -- a mask which exists to conceals her desire to perform ruthless acts upon the weak.
If the mask breaks, she would probably end up being like Empress Lu Zhi or Empress Wu Zetian.
However, that only applies when dealing with those, not of Nazarick.
Fortunately for those who do not serve Nazarick, one can take comfort in the fact that the mask is very sturdy and will not break easily.
She feels very strongly about her duties as the Guardian Overseer of the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick.
Naturally, the fact that she has ears everywhere listening for information goes without saying.
In addition, she smiles all the time -- to the point where one might say she does not show any other emotion.
Her smile is nothing more than a poker face to her.
She can also show emotions like anger, grimaces and fake tears.
Her sophisticated lady's face will not break, even when she is torturing the fools who oppose her.
By her appearance alone, she is a perfect beauty.
Incidentally, she's a slut.'
'Jesus, Tabula. What is this Gap Moe character that you've created...' I commented, and Momonga laugh out loud.
'That's the same response I gave to him when I first read her settings.' He chuckled.
'Can we change it?'
'Well, I can since I hold the staff of Ainz Ooal Gown. What do you want to change it to?'
'Just delete the slut part... poor Albedo, she doesn't deserve it. Consider it a gift from us before we part.'
Momonga then proceeds to delete 'incidentally, she's a slut.' and then closes the settings tabs on Albedo
'Bow down' he commanded the NPC.
Then he looked up to the flags of the members of Ainz Ooal Gown and pointed at them one by one. 'Me, Touch Me, Shijuuten Suzaku, Ankoro Mochi Mochi, Herohero, Peroroncino, Bukubukuchagama, Tabula Smaradigna, Warrior Takemikazuchi, Variable Talisman, Genjiro...'
I continued listening to him with heavy heart. For the past year, YGGDRASIL has been an adventure. A precious memory, a treasure that I would cherish. I have a second home, a new family and friends. Player, no... people who are loyal to me.
My heart clenches painfully. Despite all the had done to make the members closer, it was no use after all. Of course I can't blame them, they have more important things to do and I understood. They are not betraying Ainz Ooal Gown, they were just away for a while.
But with the shut down, now they are away forever...
I looked at Momonga, who is still listing all the names of the members of Ainz Ooal Gown. Then I remembered how hard it must be for him since he loves Ainz Ooal Gown more than I did. He is one of the original nine after all.
'...and finally Tiamat.' He finished. 'It was really fun wasn't it to be able to play together...'
The clock reads 23:57:12
I hummed in acknowledgement as I'm on the verge of crying, I don't want Momonga to know. I don't deserve to cry. He did.
'After this I have to wake up at 4 A.M, I hope this doesn't affect my job.' He chuckled light heartedly.
I hummed again...
'I hope we can play another game in the future...'
Numerous ideas and goodbyes passes through my head like a storm, and I was unable to convey my thoughts to him with such little time, so I can only meekly reply 'Me too...'
'You know Ann?' I stiffened at my real name. Momonga and I know each other IRL, especially after the events at my bakery. Even IRL, he would call me by my avatar's name, and he rarely ever mentioned my name. 'Your bread is really delicious.'
I gave him a small giggle 'I know, that's why it sells.'
The clock reads 23:58:30.
'I liked you a lot, you know...' A shocked noise left me. But he continued, 'I've liked you since I first watched your PvP with Touch Me. Your build is a mess it's absolutely mental.'
'The hell? Don't mock my Tiamat you, you...' I scamper to find a word of insult until I decided on 'Kel'Thuzad!' A reference to the ancient RPG World of Warcraft.
I used to joke to Momonga a lot about his character which looked similar to the Undead from WoW the Frozen Throne.
He just laughed and replied. 'But it's not just that. You are kind, and you always put out your heart in everything. Don't think I didn't notice that you're trying to reduce tension between the guild members. And even if you think otherwise, I think you're beautiful.'
'S-So blunt...' Then the atmosphere between the two of us becomes quiet, it's like he's waiting for my reply.
The clock reads 23:59:40.
'Then tomorrow, let's meet up at my bakery.' I decided.
'I'd like that...' He put his hand on his guild staff and I followed.
'I never want this to end...' I whispered, on the verge of crying.
'Me as well...'
The clock has finally reached 00:00:00
YGGDRASIL is no more.
Or so they thought.
